Comic Book reviewsI'm not sure how many people around here read comic books, but I'll throw out a few reviews of some trade paperbacks that I bought recently just in case anyone is interested.* Ignition City Volume 1 Warren Ellis, Gianluca Pagliarani This is a very good comic. If you like steampunk sci-fi type action adventure then this book will be right up your alley. I'm excited to see where the series goes after this. * Spider-Man: Red-Headed Stranger Fred Van Lente, et al Truthfully, I bought this comic just for the picture of Mary Jane on the cover. Very sexy. But if you like Spidey then you'll probably like this book. My problem with it is that the new Spiderman ret-con has basically set the series back to square one and I feel like I've read all these stories before. * Dominic Fortune: It Can Happen Here And Now TPB Howard Chaykin This is a Marvel MAX series that I bought because I remember the character Dominic Fortune from some Captain America books back in the day. I've never bought a MAX title before, but I heard they were more "adult" than regular comics. This book was definitely that. Let's just say there was a naked lady on the very first page and plenty of sex throughout. I was a little disappointed with the story and the art fluctuated wildly from what must have been different artists drawing different issues. I don't really recommend this, but it was surely something new, and adult. * The Cleaners: Absent Bodies Mark Wheaton, et al This is a very creepy series about a guy who cleans up after really gruesome murders and searches for clues that the police don't find. It seems like he works for a secret organization that tracks down supernatural killers, but that hasn't really been spelled out yet. Anyway, it was really good and this is the first volume so you should pick it up. * Siege Prelude: Road to Siege Brian Michael Bendis, et al I don't buy individual comics, only trades, so I'm always missing out on continuity stuff. I figured this would be a good way for me to prepare for Marvel's big summer event "Siege", but really I had read most of the stuff in this book elsewhere. If you missed the last year of Marvel continuity then this book is ok, but I don't really recommend it. * Irredeemable Vol 2 Mark Waid Second volume of this comic about a Superman-like hero who goes nuts from hearing everyone on the planet asking him for help then complaining after he gives it to him. It's definitely interesting and this book has some neat twists, but you'll definitely want to get the first volume before you read this. * Thor Vol 3 J. Michael Straczynski If you like Thor at all you should be reading this series by JMS. Lots of crazy stuff has happened in the Marvel U regarding Thor and the other Asgardians, and this series sums it all up very well. All I have to say is, Asgard in Oklahoma, Asguardians in Latveria, Thor has The Odin Power, The Warriors Three rock, Loki is a chick, Mjorlinir breaks, and Dr. Doom wants to be a god. 'Nuff said. Go out and buy Vol 1,2 &3. |
