Mezzo Blog 3Oh hai Mezzo Blog readers.Let's jump straight into it, shall we? Here is the status of Mezzo Shark vs. Giant Octavepus. "Target Destroyed" is officially done, locked in, finalized, etc. After trading comments a few times throughout the week and making a bunch of minor and not-so-minor revisions with my advisor, the piece is done. All that's left to do now is tightening up the playing and getting it up to speed. "SCIENCE!!!" is on the verge of completion and being locked in. I need to do a few more minor tweaks and add in a little thing, but I'm feeling good about it. I ended up deciding to leave the ending as is and letting it be the shortest of the three (which, at 6-7 minutes, isn't saying much). It feels pretty compact and loaded with goodies at the moment though, and I'm really excited to hear it come together performance-wise. "Pheromones" is still a mess. Fixed up a few things from last week, but I still need to write a bunch of stuff and finish it. I have a good idea of where I want to take it though and some time to work on it (next week is Bard's spring break, so no rehearsal). I'm also thinking at the moment of switching SCIENCE and Pheromones again with the direction I want to take this in. Going for the big, climatic ending. Didn't get any good clips yesterday of the latter two pieces (drummer had to leave 40 minutes early), but here's a few minutes of the middle section of "Target Destroyed" that goes on nicely until we stop due to what my advisor thinks are wonky voicings but turns out to be (after minutes of discussion) bad intonation from one of the trumpets. Always be tuning. ![]() As I was ready to write this up, I got in a conversation with a good friend of mine in Jamaica who graduated with me as a dance major and was very interested and excited in the prospect of the Mezzo Shark dancers as discussed last week. She's volunteered to act as my liaison to the dance department and contact people on my behalf who she thinks would be very interested in a project of such magnitude and awesome. Just wrote up a blurb/letter for her to pass on. My advisor is still 100% behind this, so as long as we can organize it and make it happen logistically, IT'S HAPPENING. Should have updates on this for next week. -------------- Other stuff. No news from any of the places listed last week on the job front. To be expected I guess. Frustrating, but not much I can do about it without coming off as desperate (even if I am a little bit). Need to keep sending out more resumes and cover letters and play the waiting game until something opens up. I did receive an e-mail from this guy in Princeton who I've traded e-mails with multiple times since November (all of which never went anywhere because every time I tried setting up a phone call with him it fell through and then I wouldn't hear from him again for a while) asking if I was still looking for part-time work. Of course I said yes and that I'd still love to talk to him, but we'll see if he actually follows through this time or continues to be a I also applied for an internship with American Apparel of all places to do video production/post-production work for this online radio station they run. I'm incredibly qualified to do this, and if I were contacted by them to come aboard I most likely would, though only if they were willing to pay me some because there's no way I'm traveling to Brooklyn a few times a week on my own dime. Despite my qualifications, I ran into a bit of a problem with the last part of their application, which for some reason asked you to upload up to three photos under 100kb to show "your personal style and how you present yourself." I really had no idea what that meant unless it was coded language for "We want to make sure you're pretty/hipster enough for us," (which unfortunately is actually plausible for them) in which case go fuck yourselves, American Apparel. Even though I really did need a new avatar, the real reason I Walkenized myself was to send them "my personal style and how I present myself." So if I don't hear back from them, I won't be heartbroken. Hopefully someone over there has a sense of humor though. You can't resist the Walken. There's also the possibility that I might be working with Farrington's (music store I teach at) over the summer for this summer program my boss is trying to put together. 1-4 Mon-Fri teaching little kids music basics on recorders and shit. $15/hour, so nothing to sneeze at. Only problem is I'm not sure if I want to lock myself into that just on the off-chance that a real job opportunity comes along between now and sometime during the summer. I guess I'm just going to have to be upfront with her and tell her I'll do it, but if I do happen to be offered a better opportunity that couldn't wait until the end of the summer that I would have to take it. Hopefully she's okay with that...as well as the vacation time I want to take this summer with family and YOU LOVELY PEOPLE. As mentioned before, no rehearsal next week, but there will be a Mezzo Blog entry, and I will see if I can whip up some media to offer your ears. Got an idea, but I won't say. 'til next week. Keep being awesome, and thanks for reading!
