Post Apocalyptic World, Days 22 - 24Day 22There’s nothing to really say. We hid from most encounters and didn’t have any problems. Surprisingly, for the first few hours, Jack was skipping along the path with us. That defiantly helped my mood. We stayed the night in a cave. Day 23 We had a rough day. We ran into a bunch of local wildlife, none of it friendly. The, we nearly lost Archer when a thing that resembled a huge dog attacked him from behind. I managed to hit it right below the neck with a shot from crossbow, barely that is. One inch higher and Archer would’ve died. Cassie and Danielle ended up arguing if we should head further south towards the mutants’ area to avoid all the animals up here. They decided to bear a little south but not too far so we’re still in the Animal area but nearing the border of it. That night, we stopped near a large tree and set up watches. I was with Dawn in the morning …. Day 24 I barely manage to suppress my yawn; haven’t had a decent night’s sleep in a while. I’m sitting Indian style underneath the tree with my back to it. The sniper rifle is next to me while my crossbow is in my lap. For an extra safety measure, I have the pistol in my hand. Listening, I close my eyes for a few minutes. “Mell, wake up.” Dawn said. “I’m not asleep. If I was I wouldn’t be sitting up.” I grumble. “Well, it’s kind of hard to tell since you’re leaning against the tree.” She said. Then silenced followed. It was the eerie and uncomfortable silence, my least favorite. “So we’re supposed to get to the outpost today?” I ask after a few minutes. Even though I already know the answer, I ask to just try and end the silence. For a few minutes I don’t hear an answer. I grab my pistol tighter. “Dawn?” I say uncertainly looking around the tree. I see her but it was not a sleeping Dawn I saw, instead, I see that she has a cut on her neck. “DAWN!” I scream loudly. The others in the group are immediately up looking around. Only Danielle and Archer rush over to us. I use my hands to try and stop the bleeding. “What, what is it Mell?” Archer asks as they run up to us. Instead of answering I nod towards Dawn. “Shit, how’d this happen?” “I don’t know. I didn’t hear anything. We were talking then had a few minutes of silence. When she didn’t respond when I asked her a question, I saw her like this.” I said. I couldn’t hide the fright in my voice as I told them. “Damnit, that means we’re in trouble up here.” Danielle said. We managed to stop the bleeding and cover it up. “We have to move now and get to a new location. Archer, I need you to carry her. Mell you take his bow and hold it for him. I’ll take Dawn’s weapons.” Archer and I nod our heads. I grab his stuff as he picks up Dawn carefully and hands her weapons to Danielle. By that time, the rest of the group had arrived at the top of the small hill. Quickly, Archer explained what happened and that we were moving. The other nodded their heads and we started moving again. However, the going was slow because multiple times we had to fight off attacks from animals that were drawn by the smell of Dawn’s blood. However, things got really bad as were attacked from behind from a large group of super mutants. Before we even knew they were there, the group had already shot Paula. I turned and fired at them as quickly as possible knowing it was already too late for her. Paula was dead before she even hit the ground. I covered Cassie as she did a quick pulse check on Paula then shook her head and grabbed her supplies. We managed to break free from the large group of mutants and animals without losing anyone else. I felt about leaving Paula’s body behind like that but there wasn’t anything we could’ve done for her. Shortly after that, Dawn started to come to. I pointed this to Archer who shifted the way he was holding her so it’d be more comfortable for her. Looking up ahead, I managed to spot the building we were aiming for. Then again, it was hard to miss since it was the only building that was still standing that we could see. At the sight of the building we doubled our pace racing to get there soon. Archer’s hand was now covered in blood meaning that the wound was bleeding through the bandage. To prove that point, Dawn had slipped unconscious again. That’s when we all heard a startling cry. Turning around, I saw the largest animal I had ever seen. It looked like four of the dogs could fit in it easily. The creature had Jack by waist. I starred in horror as the thing took his head off with one swipe of its paw. Looking up, I made the mistake of catching its eye and all I saw inside of it was a cold and painful death smiling at me wickedly. With a ferocious roar, it charged straight at me knocking Cassie over in the process. I saw that its hide was riddled with bullets. That thing would tear us to pieces. Unless … with a plan that was beyond crazy I took off in the opposite away from the compound and the group telling them to get to the base with Dawn. I took one glance over my shoulder and saw Danielle dragging an unwilling and fighting Cassie with her towards the base. Archer was already nearing the doorway with Dawn. Then I looked back down at the bear and kept running to put more distance between it and the base, and between the base and me. So, now it was just me and the beast that had taken Jack's head off with one swipe of its paws …… TO BE CONTINUED ……..... |
