In the beginning, the Creator made the Wheel of Time, which spins the Pattern of the Ages using the lives of men and women as its threads. The Wheel has seven spokes, each representing an age, and it is rotated by the One Power, which flows from the True Source. The One Power is divided into male and female halves, saidin and saidar, which work in opposition and in unison to drive the Wheel. Those who can use this power are known as channelers; one organization of such channelers is the Aes Sedai.
The Creator imprisoned Shai'tan, known as the Dark One, a powerful, evil being, at the moment of creation, sealing him away from the Wheel. However, in a time called the Age of Legends, the Dark One was given purchase in the world through the machinations of people who opened his prison, and began his efforts to conquer the world, creation, and even the Wheel itself. In response to this, the Wheel spun out the Dragon, a channeler of immense power, to be a champion for the Light. Due to the cyclical nature of the Wheel, there has been no definitive victory for the forces of the Light; the war has been fought innumerable times since the dawn of Creation. The Dragon would defeat Shai'tan and seal him from the Wheel, only to have him come close to breaking out (or being released) several millennia later, forcing the Dragon to be reborn and repeat the entire process.
About 3000 years have passed since the last war between Shadow and Light. This war ended when the Dragon, then born as Lews Therin Telamon, led a daring raid to Shayol Ghul and sealed the breach in the Dark One's prison with the help of a group of other male channelers known as the Hundred Companions. Though Lews Therin succeeded, the Dark One managed to spread a taint on saidin itself, bringing madness and a wasting sickness to any who channeled it. The taint quickly overcame nearly every male channeler in the world, including Lews Therin and his companions, with catastrophic results that radically changed the face of the earth. From then onwards, Lews Therin was also called the "Kinslayer", as one of the last results of his madness was to destroy everyone who carried his blood as well as everyone he loved.
For these reasons, the return of the Dragon is a cause for both hope and fear amongst the populace. On the one hand, the Dragon Reborn is the only person capable of defeating Shai'tan, who will inevitably begin to escape his prison. On the other, the Dragon Reborn will still be prey to the madness caused by the taint of evil in saidin, and is a harbinger of the horrifying fact that Shai'tan is once more breaking free. The only man who can save the world is also the man most likely to destroy it. He must not only work to unite the civilized world against the Dark One, but struggle to stay alive—for, while prophecy indicates he will be reborn, it says nothing as to whether he will succeed...
Several Ta'veren, or those around whom the Pattern of Ages bends, have been discovered across the continent, but none so strong as those found in Shienar, right on the Dark One's own doorstep. The Dragon Reborn could very well be any one of the Ta'veren, or none at all. The Wheel weaves as the Wheel wills.
While the Ta'veren in this age are numerous, the Forsaken have not dwindled in number since the last raid on Shayol Ghul led by Lews Therin himself, and many have recruited numerous darkfriends to aid in the elimination of the many possible threats to their dark master. They are ruthless and cunning in their strikes on the Ta'veren and their Aes Sedai allies.
The Aes Sedai and their warders are split amongst themselves about the best course of action to take concerning the Ta'veren. Some, such as the Red Ajah, say that all males who can channel should be stilled before they have a chance to go mad and harm themselves and others, however other Aes Sedai suggest helping the Ta'veren, not knowing which might be himself the Dragon Reborn.
Tarmon Gai'don approaches.

The setting is a medieval land, much changed by the breaking.
Very few males can channel. All Aes Sedai are female, as the White Tower does not admit the male half of the power and stills any male they cross who can channel, however, some male Ta'veren find themselves tapping the True Source and channeling.
All Forsaken can channel, including the males, since their link to the Dark One protects them from the madness that consumed their counterparts under the light.
Haydin sits at a table in an inn, The Mended Wheel, in a village outside of Caemlyn. He had been traveling for days, and when he entered the inn, his entire person was dusty and in dire need of bathing. Luckily, he had enough coin to afford a night or two here, and promptly bathed himself as well as washing his clothes, for the sake of the other patrons.
meanwhile just just outside of a village nearby Aringill Jerome Paces back in forth in front of a small tent thinking. as if on a whim he reaches out his hand and a fire flares up and begins crackling merrily inside the stone circle. as if coming to a conclusion Jerome de' saud sits and crawls inside the tent
A tall, dark man enters The Mended Wheel and speaks with the innkeep, nodding and taking a table somewhat near Haydin. The man surveys the room as he sips some chilled punch, his eyes lingering a moment longer on Haydin than any else. He undoes the top lace of his black shirt, fringed with Thread-of-Gold thorn vines around the cuffs and collars, and leans back in his chair.
As Jerome channels the fire into the stone ring, the man smiles to himself. To the patrons in the common room, it merely looked as though he were enjoying himself.
*the next day* *Jerome packs up and begins the journey to Caymlyn.* *arrives* he is here... i sensed him.... now i just need to find him.... *slowly walks toward the mended wheel*

The man sits at the same table, in the same position as the night before. He seems not to notice Haydin enter, but his every fiber seems to exude knowledge of his surroundings.
the door opens rather slowly so as not to attract to much attention and jerome casually walks in he makes a slight nod to the man at the table but otherwise shows no emotions. Jerome moves over to a secluded corner of the building and sits still attracting no attention.
The man takes no notice of Jerome, aside from his initial glance to the open door. He channels a small current of air mixed with water to retain the temperature of his drink, though not enough for anyone who's not looking for it to notice. Another man in ragged clothing enters the inn, though there is something odd about him. Whenever looked at, the eyes wanted to continue past him, as if not wanting to acknowledge he existed. He approaches Haydin's table without looking up and a glint of light flashes near his leg.
The Gray Man continues walking towards Haydin's table. When he covers half the inn, his hand flashes three times and Haydin finds three blades flying through the air at him. The Gray Man lunges behind them with a fourth knife grasped firmly in his hand.
