Latest JournalView Journal

March 11th, 2010

It's MARCH ALREADY?

Time doesn't fly, it goddamn travels at light speed.

So this year I've been doing something new, at the end of each month I post a journal with all the movies I saw in the theatre in the preview month. Because, true to my name, I see a lot of movies in theatres. Since it's been a full month, lets dive right in. By the way, a local theatre was holding a digital film festival and showing old classics, so you'll see some of them pop up on the list.

1) Edge of Darkness.

Mel Gibson is great, that's about it. Plots a little stale, and you can clearly tell it was based off a 8 hour long mini series and they condensed the plot down as much as they could. But Gibson's performance is strong enough that the film is enjoyable.

2) The Godfather.

A utter masterpiece. Perfect from start to finish. If you haven't seen it... ~SLAP~ go watch it! yes, it IS that good.

3) Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Loved this when I was a kid. was under impressed when I re watched, it, it's good, but... not great. Though I saw this right after the Godfather, which probably didn't help it. Has some very good moments.

4) 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Technically brilliant film. One that can be talked about and debated for hours after viewing it. I personally love the middle chapter the most, the mission to mars segment, but all of the film is excellent.

5) The Thing.

Oh I loved this. First time seeing it, after a full day of watching movies in a theatre. (Saw Godfather, Close Encounters and 2001 before this. t'was a good day.) excellent acting, amazing practical effects, and perfectly sets up the atmosphere of tension and paranoia perfectly. Such a great horror film.

6) The Princess Bride.

A heart warming tale of true love... with awesome sword fights and witty banter. What's not to love? It makes you feel 12 years old again.

7) Labyrinth.

I never saw this growing up, so the soft glow of nostalgia didn't cover this film for me. I did enjoy it, but not to the extent of most people I saw it with. Bowie is pretty awesome, and the puppets are great. but really... this is a messed up weird flick. When Bowie started singing to the goblin puppets I thought I was tripping on drugs.

8) The Shawshank Redemption.

Freeman, Robins, and a lot of time to tell a story of the life of two prisoners. A great film that's worthy of all the praise it gets.

9) From Paris With Love.

Really fun action flick. I like most films Luc Besson has a hand in, and this is no exception. Travolta pulls off the wise cracking bad ass well, and Rhys-Meyers works well as his straight man. A good popcorn time waster of an action flick.

10) Speed.

Pop quiz hot shot, you have a chance to see one of the most perfectly structured, over the top 90's action flicks on the big screen, what do you do? What do you do? Go see it, obviously. Forgot how much fun the score was as well.

11) The Wolfman.

I liked it. Full review here.

12) Avatar.

Fourth time seeing it. It's pretty. Fourth time in the dialogue starts to grate, but hey, the visuals are still gorgeous.

13) An Education.

Really good film, drags a little in the second act, but it's not a fatal flaw, and the performances are amazing across the board, with Carey Mulligan holding the film with a truly brilliant performance.

14) Casablanca.

First time seeing it on the big screen, after many viewings on DVD. Has more magic that any other film I know. Probably the best movie I've seen in a theatre. A unforgettable night.

15) Street Trash.

He he he... yeah. This is a odd flick. Directed by James Camron's stedi-cam operator, it's 90% stedi-cam shots, and it's so gleeful over the top and in bad taste it's hilarious. Melting homeless people, insane 'nam flash backs, severed heads and body parts, and a cop on the edge are some of the delights waiting for you with this. If you're a fan of cult cinema, or Troma like movies, this is worth checking out. For sane people, probably want to avoid it. Needless to say, I laughed the whole way though and loved it.

16) Fantastic Mr Fox.

Second time seeing this, loved it again. Wes Anderson took a childhood favourite, and while honouring it, also managed to make a story that will appeal to adults as well. Good story telling, and charming animation.

17) Shutter Island.

Really liked this. Didn't love it, but almost did. Well shot, excellent acting. Story is predictable, but it still tells it well. Really, a weak Scorsese film it still better then most.

18) Repo the genetic Opera.

Shadow casted it. Died five times on stage.

19) Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Let's do the time warp again. Ah shadow casting... a weird thing to do.

20) Defendor.

Was really hoping for good things with this movie... it disappointed it. Harrelson is amazing in it, but the film doesn't know what it wants to be. The different tones it tries to have don't mix, and hurt each other. The drama and the comedy, and the serious side mixed with the humour don't mix well in this film. They tired to do to much, and ended up hurting the film. There's a really good idea here, and good acting, but bad writing hurts to film badly. A real disappointment.

And that's all she wrote, saw 20 films in February. Bring on March!

Peace, Charlie.

Ok, so Mass Effect Spoilers for guys just appearing here. So look away.

So, The Illusive Man lied. I know big fucking shocker, right? Well, he lied about something interesting and that lie isn't explored at all in ME2 but I believe it will be in ME3.

When you ask about your old crew he talks about how Liara's working for the Shadow Broker and thus cannot be trusted. This is interesting...but false. She doesn't work for the Shadow Broker at all. She's hunting him down to kill him. The Illusive Man would know this because Mass Effect: Redemption has her working directly for him and Cerberus to get Shepard's body from the Shadow Broker before he sells it to the Collectors.

So, having not read Redemption I went to the net for summaries of the story and the funny thing is...it's incomplete! We don't see the end and we don't see how her friend is killed or captured. Her friend, by the way, is connected to Cerberus. So we don't know exactly why she's angry at the Shadow Broker or exactly how she sets up an information broker deal on Illium.

Here's where it gets a touch more interesting.

Liara tells the romanced Shepard that she wishes she could tell us everything....she then after asking the correct question admits to feeling guilty for giving us to Cerberus. ....that's not the "Everything" she can't tell us because of spies. The spies and the Shadow Broker totally know that she gave the body to the Illusive Man. Of course, they know that. And she KNOWS she's bugged so she doesn't ever say the important information.

Fun thing, she worked for Cerberus and directly under Miranda and the Illusive Man. Yet, Miranda never says shit about Liara and the Illusive Man outright lies saying she's working with the Shadow Broker and cannot be trusted.

Liara found out something big that's harmful to the Illusive Man. Miranda either knows or knows enough to set us on the path later. There's a lot going on there that we don't know about.

.....and.....

One more thing. Remember me showing you that picture of Kasumi before she was announced as downloadable content? Well, they found her data on the discs and that's how people knew about her. They also found bits of unused Liara dialogue and other scraps of cut content and a lot of people think there may one day be a large download consisting of helping Liara...and maybe getting some much needed answers.

It's just my opinion, though. There's no reason to go spreading it around.

That is so Very Very True. In all honesty I hope that she really sincerely needed help. But with situations like that, and the way she acted when you offered up non-monetary help, It seems the other. Which is sad.
