The Invasion Pgs 52 -57, (Part 2)(Ahem, after a brief intermission, I present to you Part 2.)Gunner I've just linked all missile control to this console. They're ready and waiting, sir. Brook grins menacingly. BROOK All right, let's give a volley. Target all their ships. GUNNER Yes sir. Firing now. Numerous panels rise from each ship, revealing a large amount of missiles. Seconds later, over a hundred missiles spewed forth, flying with murderous intent towards the enemy fleet. GUNNER Sir, missiles have been fired and are en route. We have forty percent remaining. BROOK Very good, gunner. How far till cannon range? GUNNER Sir, 200 miles and closing. Estimate one minute before effective cannon range is reached. BROOK All right, be prepared to fire all cannons. GUNNER Aye aye, sir. Outside, the missiles were streaming closer and closer towards the aliens. Within seconds, explosions erupted as missiles collided. From the bridge, the aliens were clouded by the explosions. BROOK Gunner, can you confirm hits? GUNNER Um... we hit something, that much is clear. But I don't know if we caused damage, sir. The view from the bridge showed the explosions dissipating. Soon it was clear that not one missile had direct impact with any of the enemy. BROOK It seems they have shields. This does not bode well. GUNNER Sir, enemy ships are now within range of the Mag-cannons. Shall I fire? BROOK Yes, but fire all of them at one target. GUNNER Sir? BROOK They obviously have shields, but they can't be perfect. GUNNER Aye aye sir. Firing now. Outside, four shells flew from the ships, at nearly double the speed of sound. Within seconds, they impacted one of the smaller alien ships and exploded. Lights flared as the shield were brought down. Then, as if reacting to this discovery, the human fleet fired another volley of shells at the same ship. This time, each shell penetrated, exploding within the alien ship. Seconds later, the vessel exploded. Cheers rang from the bridge of the Harridan. GUNNER That's a kill, sir, but they're still moving towards us. BROOK How soon can we fire again? GUNNER Three minutes and counting, sir. Might I advise not firing in such quick succession? The batteries can't handle it, sir. BROOK Your advice is noted, gunner. Across from the human fleet, the alien ships moved closer and closer. A glow appeared from the alien ships and suddenly, a beam of light flew towards the Wolf's Child. It began moving away, but only provided a larger target as the five beams impacted, quickly melting away the hull on different parts of the ship. Within moments, the Wolf's Child exploded, it's ammo setting off and the engine itself going critical. The shockwave shook the remaining three ships. BROOK Damn it! Begin evasive maneuvers, those beams will tear us to shreds. GREY Roger that sir! The ships began moving, each going their own way. BROOK Gunner, prepare broadside guns. GUNNER Yes, captain! Broadside guns were smaller versions of the Mag-cannons. They used significantly less energy, allowing many of them to fire at once. However, the shells themselves are much smaller and as such, hold far less explosives. Soon, the human ships were in position to fire their broadsides. However, the aliens were already prepared to fire. More glows appeared. Beams lanced out, hitting the Azariah's Blessing in it's engine, causing it to go critical and explode, taking the ship with it. Other beams were fired at the Tyrant's Ascension and Harridan, but only grazed them. GREY Captain, we can't keep this up. We'll be dead before we manage to take out another ship. BROOK Damn it! He pounded his fist on the arm rest. BROOK Fire our broadsides, then get us the hell out of here. Well, that's it for this installment of The Invasion. Tune in next time when our heroes come face to face with Jesus, and he tells them that the aliens are them from the future and Oprah rules the world. (Okay, that won't happen, but wouldn't that be hilarious? Or scary?) Anyway, till next time. |
